Purpose in Life Do you ever wonder what is your purpose in life? Often, people tend to look for a particular job or task that the Lord may want them to do in life. However, the more immediate and broader question that should be asked is: “Why did God create me?” If you do not know and appreciate this overriding purpose in life, then all of your striving may be in vane. Here is an eternal perspective that can forever change your life, provided you embrace it! God revealed in the Bible why He created you, and He wants you to know it and to live it out. Simply stated, you were created to (1) love and worship God, and (2) have a close and personal relationship with the Lord – both as a child of God and as His friend (Matthew 4:10, James 2:23, John 1:12, 1 John 3:1). Humanly speaking, it can be hard to accept that you were designed to worship and serve another being. Slavery and oppression may pop into your mind. But that is not how God acted in creating you. Indeed, although God did make you for His own good pleasure, He also gave you a free will – such that you could choose not to worship or praise Him. In fact, you do not even have to thank Him. You can fight against His purpose; but it will leave you empty, often searching for entertainment, alcohol, power, wealth, sex or other things to fill the void. This brings us to the second purpose for your being created: Having a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Having created you for such a divine relationship, the Lord also imparted you with an innate longing to seek out and relate to God. In other words, having created you to be drawn to Him, God supplies you with the means to attain it. Accordingly, all your spiritual longings can and must be satisfied through a spiritual union with God; one He freely grants to those who earnestly seek Him (Deuteronomy 4:29, Matthew 7:7, Hebrews 11:6). God dearly loves you and all people. He desires that men be His sons and women His daughters – a family if you will (Romans 8:14, Galatians 3:26, Hebrews 12:7, 1 John 3:1, 5:1-5). The Lord wants you personally to share in His name, inheritance, treasures and blessings. The only way you (or others) can become God’s adoptive child is to agree to accept Him as your heavenly Father and to receive His righteousness. No one really is foolish enough to think they are perfect or actually deserve to be appointed as an heir or prince to God’s throne. Any imperfection disqualifies us. Inside, you know that you have rebelled greatly and are in dire need for mercy and grace (Romans 3:23, 6:23, 1 John 5:10). That is why Jesus had to leave heaven and take the form of a man to become your Savior. Out of great love, Jesus Christ was willing to take your sin upon Himself and to replace it with His perfect righteousness. How wonderful it is to bear the name of God, which is given at such a high cost to God Himself! Settle with God that you have accepted Him. Yet, eternal salvation is only the beginning – the starting point. You still live in this world. And God wants your family relationship to grow and prosper now, long before entering heaven to spend eternity with Him. Yes, you do have a purpose in life. It is a calling to have closeness and friendship with the Lord. This is the life long journey you were meant to have and enjoy. You do have a purpose in life, to be God’s friend. He is calling out to you. Will you respond? Will you seek to be His best friend? The Lord makes available to you His strength and power to lead a PROVEN™ life. How much better a purpose in life than Passionately worshiping and glorifying the One who dearly loves and gave Himself for you! By Repentantly returning to Christ in humility, you position yourself to experience more and more of God’s very nature. Through Openly and honestly communicating with God in a real and personal relationship, you are not only fulfilled, but also increase your capacity to have vulnerable relationships with others. Victoriously living is gained by totally submitting and fully yielding to God. In filtering your life through the Eternal perspective of loving God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength, the specific tasks you were prepared by God to do will come into focus at just the right time. The walls are further torn down by Networking in close relationships with other believers joined by the bond and blood of Christ into His church. God will use others to strengthen you and for you to strengthen them. Once welcoming a PROVEN purpose in life and seeking to fulfill it by and through Christ, you will experience freedom from bondage to whatever idol or desire you had set in the place of worshiping God, whether it was sex, money, alcohol, TV or entertainment in general. The Bible becomes your welcome road map for living a holy and pure life and prayer becomes your conduit to the source of this true life. The Holy Spirit of God Himself meets within you and acts to lead you further in divine intimacy with Christ (Hebrews 4:12, John 1:1-14, 2 Timothy 3:16). The more you seek to intimately know God, the more you fall even deeper in love with the Lord and burn with a passion and desire to continually seek His face (Psalm 27:4, 8). In short, it is God’s will for you to be holy because God is holy (1 Peter 1:15); a life marked by contentment and gratitude as you live out your purpose in life together with the One who gave you life (2 Timothy 1:9, 1 Thessalonians 4:7). What a wonderful gospel and plan of an awesome God! The Lord gives you all you need to know and fulfill your purpose in life, as well as the means to fully experience God Himself. He could not have given you more! Are you grateful and filled with peace, joy and contentment? If not, perhaps you have not fully acknowledged and sought to live out your true purpose for being created. Fortunately, God wants to grant you a humble heart of repentance and to become a real part of your life. Go to Him now and ask of Him. The Lord promises to draw near to those who draw near to Him (James 4:8). In fact, God is so merciful that He gives you “today” to turn to Him and begin anew (Hebrews 3:12-15). Will you join with other godly men and women living out their purpose for being created and carrying the stamp PROVEN by God? Will you completely yield to Christ and become a needy, dependant servant of the Lord of heaven and earth? Right now, permanently choose to set the sails of your life towards living out the purposes for which you were created! As far as what specific task the Lord would have you do, consider this passage: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).” The key is not to put all of your energies into trying to figure out which profession or ministry is His will for you. Instead, purpose to join Christ at every juncture in life. How do you know what good works He has prepared for you? First, you can be assured that it includes those things in which you must rely upon Him to complete. Again, He is interested in a continuing relationship with you, not merely accomplishing tasks. The Bible contains various other passages to help you keep this eternal perspective on your duties while on earth, keeping before you the things that are within His will. For instance, the Lord has this to say about doing His will: “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him (1 Thessalonians 4:3-6).” “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:1-2).” “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).” As you begin to evaluate your purpose in life, stop and consider whether you are hearing God’s voice on a regular basis. When you are close to the Lord – living in real dependency upon Him – He will reveal His plans to you. In fact, the Lord confides in those who seek hard after Him (Psalm 25:14). Therefore, to know what God specifically intends for you requires that you position yourself to hear His voice by humbly living out each day the elements of a PROVEN life. In sum, a PROVEN Man fully commits to the Lord and asks God to prepare and equip him to carry out His good works that have been set aside to be complete together with and through Christ. (If you have not surrendered your total life to God, do so now. If you never gave God your whole heart and accepted His invitation to become a forever adopted son, read the article Why Jesus?, and invite Christ into your heart and life as the new and forever Lord over all of it.) |
