Sexualizing the Church – The Call of our Generation

Every generation has its one definitive crisis of conscience, its greatest principle failing. We are not only endeavoring to revitalize the sexual integrity of the Church. Our mission is also sexualizing the Church once again. I think that the problem of sexual immorality stems from the de-sexualization of God’s people.

In the time of William Wilberforce, the most pervasive pangs were pronounced by institutionalized slavery. In the days of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights were the societal dilemma. G.K. Chesterton spilled most of his disparaging ink against the lunacy of moral relativism during his lifetime.

Without exaggeration or refutation, with no hyperbole whatsoever, our era is categorically identified by sexual immorality. Degeneracy and all manner of confusion continue to proliferate as a result. Not to mention the manifold and despicable abuses that occur in the wake of such a culture.

Abdicated Authority

Nature abhors a vacuum – one of the classic adages of physics. Drawing from Dreher’s Benedict Option, how the Church abdicated its authority on sex all the way back in the 50s, what we observe today is not only a degradation of sex but an overt void of sex. Sure, sex is happening, hence all the babies. What I mean to emphasize is the silence of positive engagement and, at best, an anemic response to the fallout. This abdication is what has allowed for everything from pornography to all things deranged.
 
Our people need to be allowed to talk about sex openly again. Sexualizing the Church is not an invitation to indecency; it is rather the restoration of orthodoxy. Our pastors must be equipped and empowered to preach and teach and do outreach about sex, emphatically and without shyness. The lack of engagement on this front is the very thing that has enabled the heartbreaking amount of sexual brokenness and the insidious level of heinous traumas.
 

Scions of Sexuality

Thus, our mission is not only the dissemination of resources for sexual integrity; we are also setting out to cultivate hospitality for the basic sexuality of His people at the most fundamental level. In this way, we are still creating the space in which these ideas could even be heard in the first place.
 
It is critical that we remember that our sexuality is inextricably infused within our image bearing.
“So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
    male and female he created them.”
 
In essence, a thing cannot have integrity if it does not first have a face and a name. One cannot bestow integrity upon a shadow. The corner that we are trying to turn is the difference between urgent disaster relief versus holistic community development, from haphazard hurricane shelters to robust Chambers of Commerce. Inasmuch as we are restoring sexual integrity throughout the entire Bride of Christ, we are simultaneously bringing sex itself back into the camp.
 
Sexualizing the Church, recapturing the beauty of God’s truth and goodness expressed through the gift of sex, is the only path to saving the world which we inhabit today.
