There’s little doubt that pornography has a devastating impact on individuals and the church body. The question is not if porn is a problem in the church, but how the church can work towards healing and restoration. With 97% of Christian men admitting that they’ve viewed pornography, this can be a daunting challenge to approach. However, we can say with St. Paul, “I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6). Jesus is committed to the perfection and holiness of His bride. Here are 5 ways Jesus works that refinement into His church:
Edifying each other with Biblical truths
Scripture instructs us on how to walk in truth and resist temptation. To grow in holiness, it is pivotal to seek wisdom and knowledge in God’s Word. Encourage sexual purity by proclaiming what the Lord has taught us about how sin, including pornography, affects our relationship with Him. As Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
Offering opportunities for accountability
Sharing our struggles is a powerful way to overcome sin. In fact, healing can come from confessing our sins to one another and praying for each other (James 5:16). Providing places such as small groups for brothers in Christ to speak openly and honestly about their temptations is one way to encourage spiritual growth and sexual purity.
Gathering in fellowship
Similar to accountability, a community that pursues Christ together helps believers remain strong. One of the lies of Satan is that we are alone in our struggles. Community combats this by allowing men to stand firm with others who share the same struggles. Fellowship is a way to “encourage one another and build one another up” (1 Thess. 5:11).
Praying
Pray for purity in the church. Only by the power of the Spirit can we overcome sin, but we have to ask for God to work in our weakness. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
